Freewiel Techniek was established in 1980 as the first Dutch company to produce bicycle trailers in batch. After having adapted the trailers for the transport of children, the next challenge was to make them suitable for the transport of disabled children. In 1983 Freewiel Techniek was awarded first prize in the design contest Safety in Cycling, organised by the Dutch Ministry of Transport, in the category Stable Tricycle. This meant the birth of the Trike, characterised by its two front wheels. Since then Freewiel Technique has dedicated itself completely to making products for revalidation. Oud in Afrika's aim is to help those who are unable to care for themselves and who receive inadequate care from any other quarters. The traditional care and support system that was formerly available for the elderly is/has crumbled due to the weakening of the extended family support system now under heavy attack by the HIV/AIDS scourge and war in Africa.
