Just useful information. Insightful, readable criticism. Diverse voices. Open dialogue.

Rating: 1   [rate this resource] [report errors]

Founded in 1886, the Architectural Institute of Japan (AIJ) has promoted the advancement and development of science, technology and art concerning architecture, with the mutual collaboration of its members. It was originally established as an institute for architects, with 26 founding architects. Mr. Josiah Conder, a British architect invited to teach at the Technical College in Tokyo (present the University of Tokyo) as a Professor of Architecture by the government, was elected as Honorary President of the Institute. The Institute was authorized by the Ministry of Education and changed its name to the Architectural Institute in 1905 and to the Architectural Institute of Japan in 1947. AIJ celebrated its centennial in 1986. AIJ is an academic association with about 38,000 members. It is not a governmental organization but a non-profit organization for architects, building engineers and researchers in every field of architecture. AIJ publishes results of research and studies and spreads architectural culture through its programs such as exhibitions, symposia and distributes architectural information to the public. The main purpose of the Institute is to cultivate its members' abilities and to heighten architectural quality in Japan. Front-line researchers, officers of other architectural associations and officials of government and other public offices also are members of AIJ. AIJ liaises with universities and other research institutes. As the sole integrated institute in the field of architecture, AIJ has made an important contribution to the development of science, technology and art. There are many associations for architects, building engineers, general contractors, and building materials and equipment corporations in Japan. Among these associations, AIJ has been the most prestigious academic association. AIJ organizes nationwide activities for its members. AIJ has nine chapters by dividing Japan into the following nine regions -- Hokkaido, Tohoku, Kanto, Tokai, Hokuriku, Kinki, Chugoku, Shikoku and Kyushu -- for activities to meet the detailed needs of each chapter. AIJ owns its head office building equipped with a library, a hall and conference rooms for members at the center of Tokyo.

Fraunhofer - Ambient Intelligence Views: 9840
Rating: 1   [rate this resource] [report errors]

“Ambient Intelligence“ is the target, the mobile use and incorporation of distributed, networked intelligent-components at work or at home. Smart environments in the home connect a huge variety of devices from video recorders to heating elements through to automobile electronics. Displays, sensors, control elements can be incorporated into a room, tailored to the needs of the user, and literally read his wishes from his eyes. From a technical point of view all these visions could soon be reality. Using the available information in the right place at the right time is more difficult. How can data be modeled so that it reflects a clear picture of the users needs?

HYPERBODY Research Group Views: 9849
Rating: 1   [rate this resource] [report errors]

Architecture becomes a game being played by its users. And not only architecture will be subject to the forces of real time calculation. Also planning, construction, interior design and landscape design are ready to be developed as real time games. During the design process the game is designed by the architect and played by all parties involved. During the life cycle of the building and the built environment the game is played by their users, by the visitors and by the built environment itself. Visitors become participants in the experience economy. By playing the game the participants set the parameters. Each actor triggers an array of sensors writing the new data to a database, from where the building picks up the new data and starts reconfiguring itself, in shape, in content, or both in shape and content. Then the new configuration will match to the desired conditions. It is fair to say that the building will find itself in a state of continuous operation. The building, consisting of numerous co-operating programmable elements, will behave like a swarm. The building elements will show flocking behaviour, always keeping an eye on the neighbouring actor, always ready to act and react. Hence we propose a new motto for the discipline of architecture: "Game, set and match". To be played over and over again.

Buildings are data processing machines. Buildings absorb the incoming information, process that given information and deliver it in another form. A building has its own form of metabolism; it is a body. A HYPERBODY is a programmable building body that changes shape and content in real-time. It is the hyper version of the normal building body, just like hypertext is the hyper version of plain text. A HYPERBODY is never finished, always being redesigned by its users. This kind of architecture is E-Motive architecture. The HYPERBODY Research Group of the Faculty of Architecture, Delft University of Technology, investigates all facets of e-motive architecture. We use advanced CAD and game development software to design and simulate hyperbodies.

MIT Project Oxygen Views: 9855

For over forty years, computation has centered about machines, not people. We have catered to expensive computers, pampering them in air-conditioned rooms or carrying them around with us. Purporting to serve us, they have actually forced us to serve them. They have been difficult to use. They have required us to interact with them on their terms, speaking their languages and manipulating their keyboards or mice. They have not been aware of our needs or even of whether we were in the room with them. Virtual reality only makes matters worse: with it, we do not simply serve computers, but also live in a reality they create.
