European Society for Philosophy of Medicine and Healthcare Views: 9826
Rating: 1   [rate this resource] [report errors]

In August 1987, the European Society for Philosophy of Medicine and Healthcare (ESPMH) was founded and its first conference was held at Maastricht, the Netherlands, with "The Growth of Medical Knowledge" as its main topic. The ESPMH was instituted by an international company of philosophers, physicians, ethicists and other interested professionals in the field with a view to the growing need for critical reflection on the role of medicine and health care in our present society. Health-related issues increasingly influence the functioning of social security systems (social welfare systems) and demands for health care strain the national budgets of most western countries. In our culture, resulting problems tend to be approached by searching exclusively for technocratic and econometric solutions. Philosophical analysis and ethical evaluations have long been neglected. Recently however, Faculties of Medicine, professional organisations and to a certain extent, the popular mind, have shown an increase in awareness of these deficiencies. New teaching programs and research projects on meta-medical subjects are now being introduced but often meet with strong opposition, if not straightforward obstruction. Thus it seems imperative that these efforts should be strengthened through contacts and cooperation at a European level.

The UK Biobank project will be the world's biggest resource for the study of the role of nature and nurture in health and disease. Up to half a million participants aged between 45 and 69 years will be involved in the study. They will be asked to contribute a blood sample, lifestyle details and their medical histories to create a national database of unprecedented size. Many disorders, including cancer, heart disease, diabetes and Alzheimer's disease are caused by complex interactions between genes, environment and lifestyle. Researchers will use the UK Biobank resource to uncover the genetic and environmental factors that lead to these common conditions. This combination of information from participants will create a powerful resource for biomedical researchers. It will enable them to improve our understanding of the biology of disease and develop improved diagnostic tools, prevention strategies and tailor made treatments for disorders that appear in later life.

Currently, hospitals use many different hospital information systems, mainly to register non-dynamic information regarding patients, and for administrative purposes. MI consultancy has created an electronic patient records (in Dutch abbreviated to EPD). The Norma system is used in a number of hospitals in The Netherlands and is used not just to store the static patient information, but typically also enables the storage of more dynamic patient information. The Norma system enables healthcare professionals to store medical information of patients, laboratory results, x-ray images and other digital information. Patient information is entered via forms, so for instance an intensive care unit can use specific forms to store and transmit relevant patient information. The Norma system can exchange information with other hospital information systems.
